İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi

İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, or ITÜ, is one of those places in the city where the present and the Ottoman past sit almost shoulder to shoulder. The university dates back to 1773, when it began as the Imperial School of Naval Engineering, Mühendishane-i Bahr-i Hümayun, founded in the reign of Sultan Mustafa III. That makes it not just old by university standards, but one of the earliest technical institutions in the world — and the oldest technical university in Türkiye.

From Naval Engineering To A National Engine That original purpose mattered. In the late Ottoman period, the empire needed trained engineers for ships, fortifications, roads, and the machinery of a modern state. The school was created to answer that need, first for naval engineering and then, as the century turned, for broader civil and military technical training. Over time, it absorbed new disciplines and kept changing shape as the country itself changed shape around it. That history explains why ITÜ feels less like a single academic idea and more like a long chain of transformations. It has grown from a specialist engineering school into a major research university with a huge footprint in science, technology, and design.
