The first clue is in the building’s shape: the Bechtold István Természetvédelmi Látogatóközpont isn’t just a museum you enter—it’s a structure that seems to have been pressed into the landscape. On the western edge of town, in Aradi vértanúk parkja, you find a circular building sunk into the ground, faced with natural stone. It’s the kind of design choice that quietly tells you what the project’s priorities were: minimize visual impact, maximize closeness to the living ground around it.

A visitor centre shaped like a clue

From that quiet physical premise, the story starts to add up like evidence gathered piece by piece. The visitor centre was built beside the Chernel-kert Arborétum—specifically near the collection at the Chernel-kert—and it owes its existence to an institutional handoff between national parks. The project was created by the Őrségi Nemzeti Park, with support from the European Union, using the Chernel-kert as the inherited base from the Fertő–Hanság Nemzeti Park. That transfer matters: it explains why the centre’s exhibits revolve around local habitats rather than generic nature themes. The next key date turns the “idea” into a real-world opening: the centre opened in October 2006.
