Fekete Szerecseny Patikamúzeum

In Fekete Szerecseny Patikamúzeum, the real story began long before the word “museum” was ever used. This place once housed the Fekete Szerecseny pharmacy itself—Kőszeg’s first—operating on the same site from 1665 to 1983. When the last years of the working patika came to an end, the building’s most valuable contents were not only objects, but a complete sense of how pharmacy was practiced: from the room where remedies were prepared to the instruments used, and the disciplined material culture that surrounded them.

From working pharmacy to reconstructed space

The modern museum form arrived much later. The Fekete Szerecseny Patikamúzeum was established on 1980-10-20, and what you would have entered was not a generic display hall. Instead, the building was reconstructed between 1984 and 1988, using the visual and spatial logic of the 17th to 19th centuries as its model. The museum opened with a permanent exhibition and a professional collection library in 1988, presenting the patika house as a deliberately recreated historical environment rather than a set of isolated artifacts. In the museum’s organization, the downstairs had one job: to reproduce the working heart of pharmacy. On the ground floor you would have moved into an officina made between 1850 and 1860 in a Biedermeier style.
