Laczkó Dezső Museum

The first thing you feel in the Laczkó Dezső Museum is how deliberately stone and structure were asked to do cultural work. This two-storey building in Erzsébet-liget was meant to hold a county’s memory—yet its most public “material” legacy is the way time, war, and local politics repeatedly forced the museum’s plans to adapt.

A county collection finds its name

The institution’s name did not arrive all at once. It began with the idea of a Veszprém county museum in 1873, when the province first floated the need for its own organized collections. That intention only gathered real momentum roughly thirty years later, once the museum question reconnected to archaeology: the Balácapusztа excavations had produced large quantities of Roman-period finds with international significance. On 30 November 1902, the Veszprém Vármegyei Múzeumi Egylet—the Veszprém County Museum Association—was founded, with dr. Fenyvessy Ferenc, the *chief ispán*, elected as its president. Two days later, the county’s legal committee decided to establish the museum, and on 10 March 1903 it regulated the institution’s status. Crucially, the association appointed Laczkó Dezső, a geologist and a teacher at the Piarist Gymnasium, as the museum’s director.
