Museu Cosme Damião

The morning air in late July feels almost humid with anticipation. You step closer to the wall of glass and chrome, and the building’s quiet hum rises as you approach the Museu Benfica — Cosme Damião. The name itself carries a century of stories: Cosme Damião, one of the club’s founders in 1904, lends his name to this homage to Portuguese sport.

This is no ordinary museum. It’s the museum of S.L. Benfica, housed in a structure inaugurated on 26 July 2013 under the presidency of Luís Filipe Vieira.

The doors opened to the public on 29 July 2013, exactly a year and three months after construction began. The site sits near Benfica’s stadium, and the building occupies 4,000 square metres across three floors. A striking feature is a vast vertical glass parallelepiped that rises beside the main volume, housing roughly 500 trophies won by the club.

That glass tower isn’t just ornament; it’s a narrative spine, a transparent history that visitors walk around and through. Inside, you’ll find 29 thematic areas, curated from a collection of 30,000 items and around 1,000 pieces on display. The age of the artifacts spans the club’s domestic and international milestones through the 20th century, all contextualized within broader historical events.
