When the Turks conquered Crete in 1695, that warehouse became a soap factory, which kept operating until 1850. Construction of the cathedral began in 1850 and was completed in 1860, after which it was inaugurated in 1861 by the Bishop of Kydonia. As a three-aisled basilica, it took its name—Trimartiri—from those aisles, and it also preserved an icon salvaged from the earlier church in its narthex. …
