Papoura Hill Circular Structure is a rare Minoan architectural ensemble whose scale turns a hillside into an archaeological event. Dated to between 2000 and 1700 BCE, it was built from eight concentric stone rings—about 48 meters across overall—on the highest point of Papoura hill, northwest of Kastelli on Crete. The rings average 1.40 meters thick, and the tallest surviving section rises to 1.7 meters. The discovery in June 2024 happened on the construction site of the Kasteli Airport, where work for a radar system brought the circles to light. A meeting between the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport led to a decision to prioritize excavation and preservation over continuing the airport work in the area.
