On the cliff of Valerón, the cenobio de Valerón was built as a collective granary for the island’s pre-Hispanic communities. It is the largest pre-Hispanic storage site of its kind on Gran Canaria, and it was used until the conquest of the island at the end of the 15th century. Close to the Cueva Pintada de Gáldar, this “monastery”—*cenobio*—is one of the island’s emblematic archaeological landscapes and is listed as a Spanish Property of cultural interest. What makes the site practical is also what makes it defensible: the caves were carved from easy-to-dig tuff on a north-facing, sea-hidden slope, with steep access and natural shelter that helped protect stored grain.
