San Antonio de Padua is the Catholic parish church that became the municipal “parroquia matriz” in Granadilla de Abona, on Tenerife. Its story begins with a small earlier sanctuary: a primitive hermitage dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua was built around 1570 by the Portuguese settler Gonzalo González Zarco. That hermitage was raised to parish status on 30 January 1617, when Bishop Antonio Corrionero established it as the first “hijuela” of the San Pedro Apóstol de Vilaflor de Chasna parish. The present church grew through rebuilding. The original structure was demolished in 1645, then reconstructed in 1711 after its condition worsened.
