The building was designed by Austrian architect Karl Schwanzer (1918–1975) in 1954 for the Austrian pavilion at Expo 58 in Brussels, and in 1955 Schwanzer won first prize in the competition jury, which included Josef Hoffmann. The pavilion used a lightweight concept: its upper 40-by-40-metre floor floated about six metres above the ground, carried on four buttresses, while Fritz Wotruba’s monumental figural relief stood in front and earned an Expo award for best artwork.
