An AI travel companion is software that joins you while you travel and produces useful, contextual content on the fly — not a static guidebook, not a tour group. WayWhisper is one: it listens to your GPS as you walk, picks the right story for what is around you, and reads it aloud. The output is generated and fact-checked ahead of time so it works offline and so every claim has a source.
How is it different from a tour guide?
A tour guide chooses the route, the pace, and what to talk about. An AI travel companion follows you. Walk where you want, when you want, as fast or slowly as you like — the companion reacts to where you actually are. There is no group, no schedule, no waiting for stragglers, and no awkward silence when you want to skip a stop.
Does it use my location?
Yes — but only on your device. WayWhisper reads GPS to figure out which stories are nearby and how fast you are walking. Your raw position never leaves your phone. We do not build movement profiles, do not sell location data, and do not need to know who you are to play a story.
What languages does it speak?
English is the primary narration language. Hungarian and German are live in Budapest, with more languages added as the city corpus grows. Translation is handled by GPT-4o-mini against the master English narrative, and every translation is human-reviewable.
Is it really AI, or is it a script?
Both. The narrative drafts come from GPT-4.1-mini using verified sources (OpenStreetMap, Wikidata, Wikipedia, Wikivoyage). Every draft is automatically cross-checked against multiple independent sources, then reviewed by a human before publication. So the content is AI-assisted but never AI-only — and you always see whether a story is a verified fact, a documented account, or a community legend.
Do I need an internet connection?
Only to download a city pack the first time. Once downloaded, every place, every narration, and every audio file is stored on your device. WayWhisper works in airplane mode — useful for international travel where data is expensive or unreliable.
