Offline Travel Guide
What is an offline travel guide?
What "offline" should mean, why most travel apps quietly miss the bar, and how WayWhisper actually behaves in airplane mode.
What is an offline travel guide?
An offline travel guide is a guide you can use without an internet connection — useful when you are travelling abroad, in remote areas, or saving on roaming costs. The category includes downloaded PDF guidebooks, offline-capable map apps like Maps.me, and audio guides that bundle their content. WayWhisper is in the audio-guide subcategory: download a city pack, then everything works in airplane mode.
Is WayWhisper actually offline-first?
Yes — once a city pack is downloaded. The pack includes every place's coordinates, every narration text, every audio file, and the map tiles. After the initial download, opening the app does not require any network call. Many "offline" travel apps still need network for the map, for paywall checks, or for "live" content updates. WayWhisper does not. Audio plays, GPS positioning works, and saved places sync locally — all in airplane mode.
How big is a city pack?
It varies by coverage. Budapest (2,500+ places, full audio in three languages) is roughly 180–220 MB. Smaller covered cities like Győr or Pápa are 40–60 MB. Audio uses Opus codec for efficient compression. You can remove a pack any time from settings. Free users can download one city; Premium unlocks all city downloads.
What about the map?
Map tiles download as part of the city pack. Inside the covered area, the map works fully offline at the zoom levels we cache. Outside that area you would need network for tiles — but stories outside covered areas would not play anyway, so this is rarely a problem in practice.
Why does this matter for travel?
Data roaming abroad is often expensive or unreliable. Public Wi-Fi is patchy. Underground metro stations have no signal at all. An offline travel guide that genuinely works offline turns those friction points into non-issues. You can plan a walk on the train, then walk the city without ever opening a connection.
Does it update content if I am offline?
Not while offline — that would defeat the point. When you next have a connection, the app checks for updated narrations and audio for any cities you have downloaded, and you can pull updates manually from settings. Update sizes are typically small because we ship deltas, not whole packs.
