Audio Tour App
What is an audio tour app?
The category, the difference between a recording and a reactive guide, and what to expect from WayWhisper specifically.
What is an audio tour app?
An audio tour app plays narrated stories about places, usually paired with a map. Most are fixed playlists — the writer chose the route, the order of stops, and the script. WayWhisper is reactive instead: it listens to your GPS and plays the right story for whatever place you actually approach. Walk in any direction, at any pace, and the narration finds you.
How is it different from a Rick Steves audio tour or GuruWalk?
Traditional audio tours are recordings — you press play and walk to keep up. If you skip a stop or take a detour, the audio falls out of sync. WayWhisper has no fixed sequence. Every place is a self-contained story triggered by location. You can wander, double back, or improvise without breaking anything. There is also no fixed length — the app picks concise, standard, or deep-dive narration based on how fast you are walking.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Download a city pack once and every place, narration, and audio file is stored on your device. The app keeps working in airplane mode. This is the part most travel-friendly competitors get wrong: many "offline-capable" audio tour apps still need network for the map or for unlock checks. WayWhisper does not.
How are the stories written?
Drafts are generated by GPT-4.1-mini using verified sources (OpenStreetMap, Wikidata, Wikipedia, Wikivoyage). Every draft is automatically cross-checked against multiple independent sources. Each story is tagged with a trust category — Verified Fact, Well Documented, Community Fact, Local Legend, Personal Memory, or Insider Tip — so you always know what kind of source you are listening to.
Is it really audio, or just text-to-speech?
Both, depending on the place. Local TTS (Chatterbox, VoxCPM2, Piper, XTTS v2) and cloud TTS (OpenAI, ElevenLabs) generate the audio from the human-reviewed script. The voices are designed for narration, not the flat assistant voice you hear in turn-by-turn directions.
Do I need to book a tour ahead of time?
No. There is no booking, no scheduled departure, no group. Open the app, pick a city, and start walking. If you want structure, Premium has curated walking routes that connect a sequence of places — but those are an option, not a requirement.
